Day by Day Itinerary
Welcome to the peak of Gulmarg freeriding with WeSkiHimalayas! Upon arrival, focus entirely on rest and acclimatization, as this course spends significant time at nearly 4,000 meters. In the evening, we will have an in depth safety briefing covering backcountry protocols and an introduction to the high altitude environment of Phase 2.
We start by fitting you with high performance freeride boards and essential avalanche safety equipment (transceiver, probe, and shovel). We will spend the day on Phase 1 and the chair lift area to assess your riding style, edge control, and stamina, ensuring you are ready for the extreme terrain of the Apharwat summit.
Before heading to the summit, we conduct hands on training with your avalanche safety gear. You will learn rescue techniques and how to evaluate snow stability. On the slopes, we introduce powder riding fundamentals, focusing on "surfy" weight distribution and how to maintain speed in deep, untracked snow.
We take the Gondola to the summit of Mount Apharwat. At this altitude, the terrain is vast and steep. We will focus on making your first big mountain descents into the open bowls, learning how to manage your breath and energy while executing powerful turns on high alpine faces.
Today is about mastering the "steeps." You will learn advanced techniques like jump turns and aggressive pressure management to navigate narrow sections and steep pitches. We also focus on riding through variable snow, from wind crusted layers to heavy, deep pockets, ensuring you stay in control.
We head into the world class pine forests of Gulmarg. Snowboarding in trees requires quick thinking and precise edge changes. You will learn how to spot your lines through the glades, manage your speed in tight spaces, and find the best powder stashes tucked away from the wind.
As your skills peak, we look for more challenging lines, including steep faces and couloirs. You will learn about "sluff" management (the moving surface snow) and how to maintain composure on 40 degree slopes. This is where your technical ability and mountain knowledge truly come together.
To cap off the week, we aim for the legendary top to bottom run. Starting from the freezing summit of Phase 2, we will ride through the high bowls, navigate the mid mountain steeps, and weave through the lower forests all the way back to the village. It is one of the longest and most rewarding descents in the world!
