Getting to Gulmarg

The journey to Gulmarg is the first real adventure of your ski trip. Whether you're catching a quick flight from Delhi NCR or escaping the tech hubs of Bangalore for the Himalayas, getting to the powder capital requires a bit of logistical know-how.

Heavy winter snowfall transforms the final stretch of the road into a strict 4x4 zone, meaning your travel must be broken down into three distinct phases.

SXR to Tangmarg to Gulmarg Travel Map

Phase 1: Touching Down in Srinagar (SXR)

Your journey begins with a flight into Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar.

  • Timing is Everything: Morning arrivals are highly recommended. This ensures you have plenty of daylight to navigate the mountain roads and gives you a buffer for any winter weather delays.
  • Gear Check: SXR airport has very few baggage belts and it gets crowded during peak season, so claiming luggage can take a little extra time. Factor this into your driver pickup schedule.

Phase 2: Srinagar to Tangmarg

Once you land, you need to travel to Tangmarg, a town located about 50 kilometers from the airport. This town acts as the gateway to Gulmarg.

  • The Ride: You can easily book a standard pre-paid taxi directly from the airport. You can also contact us to arrange your travel from the airport. Vehicles like Innovas or Etios are perfectly fine for this stretch, as the valley roads are relatively flat and regularly cleared by snowplows.
  • Time & Cost: The drive takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic and weather, and typically costs around ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.
  • Pro-Tip: This is a great time to stop at a local roadside dhaba for a quick cup of warm Kashmiri Kahwa before the altitude and temperature shift.

Phase 3: Tangmarg to Gulmarg

This is the most important part of the winter journey. Because the final 13-15 kilometers to Gulmarg are incredibly steep, winding, and buried under deep snow, standard taxis cannot proceed past Tangmarg.

  • The Vehicle Switch: At the Tangmarg taxi stand, you will need to transfer your luggage into a local 4x4 vehicle (usually a Tata Sumo or Tavera).
  • Snow Chains are Mandatory: These 4x4s are fitted with heavy-duty anti-skid snow chains on their tires to grip the icy ascent.
  • The Cost: A dedicated 4x4 drop to Gulmarg generally costs between ₹1,500 and ₹2,000.

Arrival in Gulmarg

The 4x4 will drop you at the main Gulmarg taxi stand. Due to the deep snowpack, vehicles cannot drive right up to the doorstep of most hotels.

  • Sledging the Gear: Depending on your hotel's location, you will either walk the remaining distance or hire a local sledge (pulled by porters) to drag your luggage and ski bags through the snow.
  • Layer Up Immediately: Temperatures drop drastically the moment you reach Gulmarg's elevation (2,650 meters). Keep a heavy waterproof jacket, a beanie, and your snow boots easily accessible in your daypack so you aren't digging through your suitcase in the freezing cold.
